The reality of general anxiety

General anxiety often feels like a heavy, invisible weight. When the nervous system is in constant overdrive, the impact is felt physically and emotionally throughout the whole body.

For those caught in this cycle, the challenges may include:

  • Constant ‘what-if’ scenarios: Trying to solve every possible problem or replaying stressful memories.
  • Unpredictable triggers: A cascade of worry that seems to appear ‘out of nowhere’.
  • Physical exhaustion: Muscle tension, a racing heart, or difficulty focusing.
  • The ‘avoidance toll’: Missing out on social events, withdrawing from relationships, or leaning into unhealthy habits.

This ongoing state of high alert can lead to chronic stress, strained relationships, and impaired health or wellbeing.

Logic doesn’t stop the fear: General anxiety is an automatic, subconscious response. An over-sensitive nervous system can be easily triggered during a normal day when there is no real threat. This causes the logical part of the brain to slow down, making it nearly impossible to ‘reason’ your way out of this state.

How clinical hypnotherapy can help

Hypnotherapy aims to bypass the logical part of the brain and communicate directly with the subconscious. This enables us to safely update automatic patterns so that daily stressors no longer trigger an extreme physical response.

During our collaborative sessions, you will discover how to:

  • Notice early signs: Recognise the early physical signs of anxiety before they escalate.
  • Interrupt worry cycles: Gently interrupt ‘what-if’ thinking and safely return focus to the present moment.
  • Support physical calm: Consciously relax the body, helping to release tension stored in the chest, shoulders, and jaw.
  • Build your ‘practical toolkit’: Simple exercises that can be used anywhere to help you stay grounded.

Common questions about hypnotherapy for general anxiety

Will hypnotherapy change my personality?

No. Hypnotherapy does not change your unique personality. The goal is to help safely update the automatic patterns that generate worry and anxiety. Clients frequently report feeling more like their authentic selves—just lighter, calmer, and more capable.

Do I have to ‘relive’ my past experiences?

No. While we may acknowledge your personal history, clinical hypnotherapy is highly focused on the present. We look at the process of anxiety—how the mind is creating the worry right now—and explore practical ways to safely release it.

How many sessions are typically required?

The goal is to help you build confidence and calm in as few appointments as possible. Around three to six sessions are typically recommended to help establish new patterns and build your practical toolkit. We will review your progress at each appointment.

How do we meet?

Sessions are held via secure online video calls (telehealth). This allows you to learn and practice these calming techniques in a safe and comfortable space, without the stress of commuting or finding a car park.
